'Dynamic Frequency Control in Diesel-Hybrid Autonomous Power Systems Using Virtual Synchronous Machines' Miguel A. Torres L.
In diesel-hybrid autonomous power systems, a reduced number of diesel generators
supply the power to the load and control the frequency of the system in isolation from
the utility grid. In these types of systems, frequency variations are more likely to occur
than in large interconnected power grids, since they feature a relatively small
generation capacity and rapid changes in power demand. If generators are not able to
maintain the frequency during a transient, the assistance of other components is
required. In this presentation, the concept of a virtual synchronous machine (VSM) as
a solution to support dynamic frequency control is presented. The proposed VSM
entails the control of the grid-interface converter of an energy storage system in order
to emulate the inertial response and the damping power provided by a synchronous
generator. The damping function of the proposed VSM uses an estimated value of the
stabilization frequency of the grid. In addition, self-tuning algorithms are designed to
find optimal parameters for the VSM, and the power flow through the energy storage.
The results show satisfactory performance of the proposed VSM, which reduces the
maximum frequency deviation in 34%, for different values of the droop factor of the
grid-forming diesel generator, and reduces the power flow through the energy storage
in up to 58%, in comparison to the constant parameters VSM. At the end of the
presentation, I will also discuss possible applications of this technique to the
integration of photo-voltaic systems to conventional power systems and its
implementation with multilevel converters. |
