Modular Current Source Converters: Control System Design

Recent developments in current source inverters and rectifiers (CSI/R) topologies involve their parallel operation to handle large level of currents. These solutions deal in the case of rectifiers with (a) balancing the DC link currents, (b) operation at unitary displacement power factor, and (c) improving the input current quality. This paper presents a simple control strategy to achieve the objectives (a) and (b), while the objective (c) is accomplished by using a Modular Selective Harmonic Elimination (MSHE) modulating technique. The technique can be used in both the rectifier and inverter side. Experimental results are presented in order to confirm the theoretical considerations.
